An anionic flocculant is a chemical compound that is used to separate solid waste matter from waste water in a variety of industrial and commercial applications. Common areas of use include the clarification of dirty mine water, clarification of storm water sedimentation basins and the cleansing of industrial wastewater. However, as with most chemical compounds, there are certain safety procedures which need to be followed in order to utilize this type of compound safely.
An anionic flocculant is typically as formulation which contains anionic polyacrylamide. The product is often sold as a solid block or in powder form. The chemical is naturally white in colour. There is a faint odour to the chemical which will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
The risk of inhalation is normally low, especially where the compound is presented as a solid instead of a powder. If inhalation does occur, ensure that the affected individual is moved to a location where there is fresh air. Ensure that any blocked airways are cleared. If there appears to be any delay in recovery, seek medical advice immediately.
Most anionic flocculants are not skin irritants. Prolonged contact with the chemical may lead to a slight irritation. Should skin irritation occur, remove any affected clothing and wash skin with soap and water. The possibility of the chemical being absorbed through the skin is low.
Contact with eyes may cause some irritation which should cease once the product is cleared from the eyes. If eye contact does occur, wash repeatedly with water for an extended period of time. If the irritation continues after the product has been removed from the eye, seek medical advice.
An anionic flocculant is generally a low toxicity compound. It is not necessary to induce vomiting. If the affected individual is unconscious, place them in the recovery position and seek medical attention. Do not attempt to administer anything by mouth. If the individual is conscious, wash out their mouth and ensure that they drink water at frequent intervals to flush the chemical out of their system
